5 Habits that Keep You From Attaining Your Business or Personal Goals

Sep 22, 2022

Did you know there are only 100 days left until the 1st of the year? It might not seem like enough days to get a lot accomplished but it’s actually a lot of time. It’s 3 1/2 months. That’s more than 1/4 of the year. If you haven’t met your business goals yet or attained your personal goals yet, it’s time to evaluate why that may be the case and what you can do to make a huge difference this last 105 days. It could be something personal, business, relationships or family. It’s things you’ve really wanted to accomplish. I’m going to share with you 5 different behaviors or habits that might be holding you back from making that happen. I know you may be aware of these. But it’s always a good reminder because they’re habits that are often ingrained in our day to day activity. We have to make a conscientious effort to interrupt those patterns and to move on to something far more productive and far more fun.

The first habit is making excuses like not having enough time, money, resources, or thinking the economy the way it is. It’s thinking that there are external issues that are preventing you from getting from where it is you want to go. The excuses need to be gone. You can validate some of them but a lot of them we come up with ourselves to prevent ourselves from attaining those goals.

The second habit is waiting for someone else to take care of it for you. This can be particularly true if you’re employed somewhere. Someone else is going to figure it out…. Someone else is going to make that happen. The reality is that if you want something (business or personal) you need to grab it and you need to go for it. Lead that effort. You can certainly want to have a great team around you that can help you implement your plan. But they need to have some guidance and some leadership. Waiting for someone else to get something accomplished isn’t a good methodology to follow.

The third habit is thinking there is a shortcut to success. Think about our patients. They all want to lose weight by tomorrow and have everything done in time for that wedding or big event. We can be the same way in business. The reality is that it requires a lot of hard work. You can delegate some of that work but it does require a lot of hard work and perseverance or you wouldn’t have gotten as far as you are right now. Thinking that there is some shortcut to success is not a good habit because it keeps us from getting to where we want to be.

The fourth habit is procrastination. It’s something that can be ingrained in us but a lot of times it might be fears. You might not even realize it. It might be a fear of getting to where it is you want to go.  What’s going to happen once you get there? Am I going to have to sacrifice more with my family? Am I going to have to sacrifice more of my investment? We procrastinate and never take that first step to gain momentum to really see it come to fruition.

The fifth habit is fretting over when the perfect time will be to do whatever it is you want to do. “I’m going to wait until after Labor Day.” “I’m going to wait until after the 1st of the year.” We fret about when the best time to start is so we never really start. You might think it’s the last 3rd of the year and people are starting to think about holidays. But this is the perfect time to jump in and make some of those strides. Then at the first of the year you’re at a much better place-whether it’s a personal fitness goal, learning a new language, saving 1000 dollars for your favorite charity or you want to boost sales by an extra 100,000 dollars. You could be starting the New Year in a much better place than you are right now. Get rid of anything you didn’t accomplish this year that you thought you’d accomplish by now. Let’s start today.
